Sfmbt2 (Scm-like with four mbt domains 2) is expressed preferentially from the paternal allele in
early embryos, and in later stage extraembryonic tissues. A CpG island spanning the transcriptional
start site is differentially methylated on the maternal allele
in e14.5 placenta (Kuzmin
A et al, 2008).
Okae H et al (2012) confirmed
imprinted paternal expression of Sfmbt2 in placenta and trophoblast stem cells.
Wang Q et al (2011) showed exclusive
expression from the paternal allele in placenta and yolk sac, whereas brain showed bialleic
expression. Intron 10 of Sfmbt2 hosts a large block of miRNAs (containing Mir466b, Mir467a,
Mir669a, Mir297) which is absent in human,
bovine and Peromyscus (Wang Q et al, 2011;
Lehnert S et al, 2011). Since Sfmbt2 is
imprinted in mouse and rat only they proposed that this
miRNA block is driving imprinting of this gene.
