Gene:

BEGAIN

Chromosome:

18

Location:

18q

Description:

BEGAIN (brain-enriched guanylate kinase-associated protein 2B) is a paternally expressed transcript in the ovine DLK1-GTL2 imprinted domain (Smit MA et al, 2005). Its imprinted expression is tissue and promoter specific and polymorphic, summarised as follows: "(1) BEGAIN1 transcripts exhibit clearcut parental imprinting with nearly exclusive expression of the paternal allele in brain, kidney, and muscle. In liver, on the other hand, four out of the five individuals showed very balanced, biallelic expression; the remaining exhibited exclusive expression from the paternal allele; (2) BEGAIN2 transcripts showed balanced biallelic expression in brain, muscle, and liver, with the exception of one individual that unexpectedly expressed only the maternal allele in liver. BEGAIN2 expression was also found to be biallelic in kidney with, however, some preponderance toward higher expression of the paternal allele."
