Taxon:

Pig

Gene:

DLK1

Chromosome:

07

Location:

147.4 cM, telomeric

Description:

DLK1 was paternally expressed in backfat and muscle in three offspring from reciprocal crosses between the Korean native pig (KNP) and Yorkshire breeds (Li XP et al, 2008).
The callipyge locus in sheep is associated with muscular hypertrophy and demonstrates a "polar overdominance" (parent of origin effect) model of inheritance. To investigate the possibillity of similar effects at the homologous pig locus, Berkshire-Yorkshire crosses were analysed. Offspring were assessed for various growth, fat and muscle-mass phenotypes as well as being genotyped for a polymorphism at the pig DLK1 locus. Significant evidence for the polar overdominance model of inheritance of the DLK1 region was observed for growth, fat deposition and muscle fiber composition phenotypes (Kim K et al 2004). Significant polar overdominance at DLK1 has been confirmed (Li XP et al, 2008).
