Description:

There have been reports of both preferential paternal and maternal transmission of susceptibillity to Alzheimer disease (AD). Duara R et al. (1993) demonstrated the inheritance of AD from mothers to be 1.7 to 3.6 times more frequent than from fathers. Edland et al. (1996) also found higher maternal transmission of AD with 2.8 times that of paternal transmission. Also, in 10 families with multiple affected siblings, the ratio of affected mothers to fathers was 9 : 1. A study of 650 parents and 1,220 siblings with AD failed to show any maternal bias in transmission or increased risk for mothers with affected children, and in fact showed a significant paternal bias in transmission (Ehrenkrantz D et al. 1999).
