Gene:

Mirg/Meg9 (microRNA cluster: miR-379, miR-411, miR-380, miR-376b, miR-376, miR-134, miR-154, miR-410, miR-544, Meg9)

Chromosome:

12

Location:

54.5 cM (2)

Description:

Mirg (micro RNA containing gene) is a maternally expressed transcript containing 54 potential miRNAs (including miR-379, miR-411, miR-380, miR-376b, miR-376, miR-134, miR-154, miR-410, miR-544) within its introns. Mirg itself lacks an open reading frame (Seitz H et al. 2004; Labialle and Cavaillé, 2011). Mirg lies next to other maternally expressed non-coding RNAs such as a C/D snoRNA cluster of at least nine snoRNAs (see Rian) (Cavaillé J et al. 2002), as well as Meg3(Gtl2). Paternally expressed genes in this region include Rtl1, Dlk1 and Dio3. This region including C/D snoRNAs is conserved with human 14q32.
The nomenclature of the Mirg/Meg9 transcript is poorly defined. Some sources use Meg9 to describe the non-coding gene at the 3’ end of the extended Mirg transcript, whereas other sources use the Mirg and Meg9 terms interchangeably to describe the extended transcript.
