In mealy bugs (Pseudococcid, Planococcus), sex determination of males occurs when one haploid set of chromosomes becomes heterochromatic. The heterochromatic complement of chromosomes is invariably that of paternal origin (Brown SW et al, 1961). The paternally derived chromosomes of mealy bugs are relatively unmethylated (Bongiorni S et al, 1999).
