Taxon:

Sheep

Gene:

FecX2 (Woodlands)

Chromosome:

X

Location:

X

Description:

The FecX2 (Woodlands) gene increases the ovulation rate when paternally inherited. Ewes that inherit FecX2 paternally show an increased litter size (0.25 more lambs per ewe), no effect is observed when inherited maternally. Rams that inherit this gene from a ewe expressing the FecX2 phenotype give rise to daughters with a silenced FecX2, while rams inheriting FecX2 from a ewe with a silenced copy give rise to expressing daughters (Davis G et al 2001, Davis G et al 2005).
