Description:

Several studies support the presence of genomic imprinting in Drosophila (see review Lloyd VK et al, 1999). For example in 1959 Spofford reported that the greatest source of phenotypic variation in the expression of a mutant white locus gene was the parental source of the causative translocation (Spofford JB et al, 1959). Using a transposable P element bearing the white (w) gene, the parent of origin affected gene expression (low when paternally inherited) (Golic KG et al, 1998). In a transgenic model of position effect variegation enhancement, using Drosophila with the In(1)wm4h mutation, wm4h gene repression in the offspring was strictly dependent on the previous paternal transmission of the transgene (Laible G et al, 1997). Expression of a w+ insert in a transposable element was greater when paternally inherited (Haller BS et al, 2000). The inversion Uab(1), a bithorax- complex rearrangement, causes a specific phenotype only when paternally transmitted (Kuhn DT et al, 1988).
